Mafia Game Rules: the Complete 2026 Guide
Roles are dealt, night falls — and the game begins. But not knowing the rules is the fastest way to lose. Here are all the official mafia rules in one place.
Mafia isn't a free-for-all — it runs on precise rules. And those rules are exactly what make it fair and exciting: who speaks when, who votes for whom, who checks whom at night — it's all regulated. Below is the full list of official rules Mafia Online uses.
1. Role assignment
At the start of every game, players are randomly given a role: some are mafia (they know each other), most are townsfolk (they know no one's role), and one or two may be neutral (such as the Maniac or the Suicide). Only you see your own role — no one knows anyone else's role, except mafia members, who know each other.
2. The order of the night phase
Night follows a strict order:
- The mafia wake up and jointly choose one victim (the vote is hidden).
- The detective checks one player, learning whether they are mafia or innocent.
- The doctor protects one player — if the mafia targeted that exact person, they survive.
- Other special roles (Lawyer, Tramp, Mistress, etc.) use their ability once.
- Once all actions are done, night ends and the result is announced.
3. The day phase and voting
Once the night's result is announced, the town wakes up and discussion begins. There is usually a fixed time for discussion — everyone can speak, ask questions or defend themselves.
- Every player votes for one other player.
- The player with the most votes is 'lynched' — removed from the game.
- On a tie, there's usually a revote or no one is removed, depending on room settings.
- The removed player may or may not reveal their role, depending on the mode.
4. Win conditions
| Team | Win condition |
|---|---|
| Town | All mafia members are eliminated |
| Mafia | The mafia's number equals or exceeds the town's |
| Maniac | Every other opponent is eliminated and the maniac remains alone |
| Suicide | Only wins if lynched during the day vote |
5. Common rules questions
- Can a dead player talk? — No, an eliminated player usually becomes a spectator and can't join the discussion.
- Can you vote for yourself? — Usually not, though this depends on room settings.
- Can mafia members defend each other during the day? — Yes, that's one of their core strategies.
- Who dies on the first night? — In many versions the first night is a 'get to know each other' night — no one dies, or the mafia simply learn who each other are.

A player who doesn't know the rules is the biggest threat to their own team. A player who does turns every vote into a weapon.
